About Belgium

Belgium is coal free and has no coal plants under construction or in planning stages. Belgium’s last coal power plant, the Genk-Langerlo power station, was a 560 megawatt (MW) coal-fired power station located in Limburg province and closed in 2016. Belgium is a member of the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA). Belgium relies heavily on nuclear and gas power plants for its electricity needs. Belgium, as an EU member state, signed the EU's most recent Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) submission under the Paris agreement, in which the EU pledged to reduce emissions by 55% below 1990 levels by 2030; it is also adhering to the EU goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
