About Belgium

Belgium is coal free and has no coal plants under construction or in planning stages. Belgium’s last coal power plant, the Genk-Langerlo power station, was a 560 megawatt (MW) coal-fired power station located in Limburg province and closed in 2016. Belgium is a member of the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) and relies primarily on nuclear and gas-fired power plants to meet its electricity demand. In November 2025, the European Union submitted its updated Nationally Determined Contribution (“NDC 3.0”), introducing an indicative 2035 emissions reduction target and reinforcing the EU-wide commitment to climate neutrality by 2050, which provides the policy framework within which Belgium’s coal-free status is situated.
