About Denmark
Denmark joined the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) in 2017, the year it was launched, declaring that it would work to phase out coal by 2030. As noted on its PPCA website profile, the coal consumption in its energy sector varies depending on the availability of imported electricity from hydro and other relatively cheap sources from neighboring countries. The country’s remaining coal plants, with 1,560 megawatts (MW) of capacity and largely operating for energy security reasons, all have individual closure dates. Nordjylland power station is slated to be the last to close, scheduled for retirement in 2028. In September 2021, Denmark was part of the coalition of national governments that launched the No New Coal Power Compact, which requires supporters to cease permitting of new coal power plants and end new construction of unabated coal plants by the end of 2021.
