About Finland
Finland has no coal plants under construction or in planning stages. The country has 1,160 megawatts (MW) of operating coal power capacity and 125 MW of mothballed capacity. As a member of the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) since 2017, Finland is committed to phasing out these coal plants by 2030 and switching to clean energy sources for producing electricity. Finland relies heavily on hydro, nuclear and bioenergy for its electricity needs. With the exception of peat, which is variably classed as either a fossil fuel or a slow-renewable fuel, Finland imports all fossil fuels used for electricity production. In 2019, the Parliament of Finland passed a law to ban coal for energy production by May 1, 2029. Finland has a goal to reach carbon neutrality by 2035.
