About Honduras

Honduras has no operating coal power capacity and no capacity under development. The country stopped using coal at the 70 megawatt (MW) Bijao power station in 2017. In May 2025, Honduras joined the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA), a coalition of governments committed to transitioning away from coal. The country’s entry into the PPCA implies a cancellation of its last coal plant proposal, the 100 MW Puente Alto Energy power station. The country’s Paris climate pledge, laid out in its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) report (2021 revision), calls for a 16% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 but does not stipulate any specific reduction in electricity generation from coal or other fossil fuels.
