About Ireland
As a member of the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) since 2018, Ireland committed to phasing out coal power and switching to cleaner energy sources by 2025. Moneypoint power station was a 915 megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant in Munster. It was Ireland's largest electricity generation station and only coal-fired power station. The plant ceased burning coal in June 2025 but would remain in reserve and burn oil until 2029, as necessary. In 2019, the government launched its climate action plan, which included the commitment to end the burning of coal at Moneypoint. The plan also targeted halving the country's emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
