About Israel
As described in Israel’s Powering Past Coal Alliance profile, coal plants have been an important part of the country’s energy system since its establishment and have provided up to 75% of electricity generation. However, since 2013, Israel's power mix has been aggressively transitioning to other energy sources, including gas and renewables. The July 2021 update of Israel's Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement noted the government's October 2020 commitment to completely phasing out coal-fired power generation by 2026, five years earlier than originally planned, and to increase the share of renewable power generation to 20% in 2025 and 30% in 2030. At the time of the commitment, the Environmental Protection Minister opposed the plan, saying it placed too much emphasis on gas while setting a low bar compared to other developed countries. Israel’s coal electricity generation has been stable over the years, with gas rising to meet new electricity demand. Between them, the two fuels supply 98% of Israel's electricity.
