About Latvia

Latvia has no operating coal plants, making it a coal free country. Latvia’s electricity supply is generated using hydropower, gas, and bioenergy. In 2004, the power utility company Latvenergo proposed the Kurzeme power station, a 435 megawatt coal-fired power plant, but it was cancelled in 2017. Latvia has been part of the Powering Past Coal Alliance since 2017 and has committed to no new coal. As part of the EU, Latvia has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030.
