About Peru
Coal is not a major energy source in Peru. Peru’s lone 135 megawatt (MW) coal plant was decommissioned at the end of 2022, and there are no new coal plants in development. In 2020, Peru became the first South American nation to join the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA). Peru’s Paris climate pledge, laid out in its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) report (2020 revision), calls for a 30% to 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 but does not stipulate any specific reduction in electricity generation from coal or other fossil fuels.
