About Portugal
Portugal closed its final remaining coal plant, the Pego power station, in November 2021. Portugal has no coal plants under construction or in planning stages, and it is officially coal free. As a member of the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) since 2017, Portugal committed to being coal free by 2021. The 2,028 megawatts (MW) of retired coal plant capacity came from only three total plants built between 1964 and 1995: the 50 MW Tapada Do Outeiro power station retired in 2000, the 1,250 MW Sines power station in Alentejo retired earlier in 2021, and the Pego power station. The majority of Portugal’s electricity needs are met by wind and hydropower sources.
