About Sweden

Sweden currently has no operating coal plants or proposals for new coal plants, making it coal free. The country retired its last coal-fired power station in 2020, two years earlier than anticipated, making it the third European country to complete its phaseout of coal power. Electricity is now generated through a combination of hydropower, nuclear, wind, bioenergy, and other fossil fuels. The vast majority of the country's energy mix is renewable, with just 2% of power estimated to be generated by fossil fuels. Sweden has been part of the Powering Past Coal Alliance since 2017 and has committed to no new coal; it has also pledged to be carbon neutral by 2045. In 2021, Sweden agreed to halt export guarantees (foreign financing) to the fossil fuel sector abroad.
