The Czech Republic has 24 operating coal plants. The country has had no new coal plants under construction or in planning since the 2020 commissioning of a unit at Ledvice power station. Coal capacity has slightly declined since 2015 with the retirement of some old plants. The country is a mid-size coal producer and consumer with large reserves in the Upper Silesian basin. The Czech Republic, as an EU member state, signed the EU's most recent Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) submission under the Paris agreement, in which the EU pledged to reduce emissions by 55% below 1990 levels by 2030; it is also adhering to the EU goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. In August 2019, a multi-stakeholder coal commission was established to assess the possibility of a coal phaseout. The new Czech government adopted a 2033 coal phaseout in January 2022. The Czech Republic became a member of the Powering Past Coal Alliance in December 2023.
