About Romania
Romania has six operating coal plants with a total of 2,260 megawatts (MW) of capacity. The country's coal capacity has been slowly decreasing over the years. The coal fleet is an aging one, as no operating plants have been commissioned since 1988. The country is a midsize producer and consumer of coal, with most coal reserves located in the Oltenia region. Romania has no new coal plants under construction or in planning since the cancellation of a proposed 600 MW coal unit at the Rovinari plant in 2020. The country has committed to phasing out coal by 2032. As of January 2025, seven out of 11 coal units in Romania have an established retirement date between 2025 and 2032.
